TWO KENDALL SC ALUMNI JOIN THE CAROLINA RAILHAWKS Martin Nuñez and Richard Perdomo Fulfill their Dream of Playing Professional Soccer
April 10, 2008 - The Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division have signed Uruguayan forward Martin Nuñez to a one year deal for the 2008 season and Honduran native defender Richard Perdomo, adding some South American flare and two Kendall SC alumni to the roster in one fell swoop. Nuñez last played with Kendall SC in the 2007 Super Y-League U20 season and Perdomo´s last year at the club was with the U18 team in the 2003-2004 season, before he headed out to Creighton University for his first two years of college.
A native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Nuñez moved to the United States when he was nine years old. He left Georgia Perimeter College after one year to pursue a professional career and was drafted by Miami FC in the second round of the 2007 USL College Player Draft but never signed a contract. In 2008 Nuñez was offered a Major League Soccer contract with the New York Red Bulls but opted to play for the RailHawks instead.
“Martin is a dynamic offensive player,” said RailHawks Head Coach Scott Schweitzer. “He is virtually unstoppable one on one and has the ability to attack on the flanks or centrally. His ability to finish the ball is uncanny.”
In his freshman year, Nuñez, a National Junior College All-American, topped the nation with 30 goals scored, placing him second at Georgia Perimeter in the number of goals scored in a single season. He will now finally begin his professional career with the Carolina RailHawks.
“I am very excited to join the Carolina RailHawks and begin my professional career,” said Nuñez. “I have seen the beautiful facility and can’t wait to score some goals inside WakeMed Stadium.”
Perdomo joins the RailHawks from Mercer University where he was captain of the Bears his junior and senior year tallying six shots in 31 games played. Prior to transferring to Mercer University, Perdomo was a star defender at Creighton where he was named to the Top Drawer National Team of the Week in October 2005, his sophomore year.
“Richard Perdomo is a right center back who plays like Puyol or Cannavaro,” said RailHawks Head Coach Scott Schweitzer. “He makes up for his smaller stature with speed and intelligence. He’s a versatile player who brings international flare and professionalism.”
Perdomo is also on the radar screen of the Honduran Soccer Federation having trained with the Honduran National Team during the Gold Cup in Miami in 2005. He just recently won the Copa Latina with a team owned by the managers of the Honduran U-23 team and hopes to get called up in the next round of Olympic qualifiers should Honduras advance.
“I am really excited to be a part of the Carolina RailHawks family,” Perdomo said. “I am anxious to meet the guys, get the season started, and work hard to be able to contribute to the team and make a run at the USL Championship. I have heard nothing but great things about the RailHawks organization, coaches, and fans. I am looking forward to getting my professional career started here in North Carolina and be a part of this great community and family.”
With the signings of Nuñez and Perdomo it makes six recent Kendall SC grads that are palying professionally in the United States and Europe. Luis Calix and Nico Mosqueras play with Miami FC, also in the USL First Division, while Bryan Arquez is on the top squad of German Bundesliga team Herta Berlin and Marco Francescoli is on the Primevera squad of Italian Serie A club Cagliari. |
